What to Do When Your Amazon Package Says Delivered but Isn’t There

When Amazon says your package has been delivered but you cannot find it, the first move is to pause before ordering another one. Courier scans can be delayed, misplaced or recorded before the parcel reaches its final resting place. Checking the evidence and contacting the right party can prevent a replacement order, duplicate charge or unnecessary dispute.

The delivery label on your Amazon order should be the starting point. It may identify a normal post, a courier vehicle, an apartment collection point or another safe place. A tracking scan is also evidence that someone handled the parcel, but it does not always prove it was left at the correct address or in a secure location.

Keep the order number, tracking number and delivery notification available. Take a quick look around the entrance, check any safe-place instructions and note the time shown on the update. If the parcel remains missing, contact Amazon and the courier through their official channels rather than relying on links or phone numbers contained in an unsolicited message.

Check the delivery information first

Open the order through the Amazon app or by typing amazon.com.au directly into your browser. Some messages that imitate Amazon notifications are phishing attempts, so the official order page is safer than tapping a link in an email or text. Check the delivery status, courier name, tracking history, delivery date and any photograph or location information attached to the scan.

Compare the tracking record with the delivery instructions you entered. “Delivered” can mean left with a resident, placed in a communal mailbox, handed to reception or deposited at a collection point. It may also be an electronic scan from a vehicle. If you asked for the parcel to be placed behind a planter, inside a screened porch or under an awning, search that precise location first.

Look through the order history for split shipments and marketplace sellers. One order can contain several parcels dispatched from different Australian warehouses, so one delivered scan does not mean every item has arrived. Note any item still marked as in transit, and check whether the missing product was sold and shipped by Amazon or by an independent seller on the Australian marketplace.

Search the places couriers commonly use

Start near the front entrance and work outwards. Check the porch, verandah, doormat, letterbox, side gate, rear steps, garage door and any sheltered area beside the building. In suburban Australian homes, parcels are often left near a front door, but a driver may have placed them behind a bin or beside a garden bed where they are easy to overlook.

Australia Post and other delivery companies may redirect a parcel to a depot, post office or collection locker. Look for a card, key or collection notice that could have been pushed through a gap in the door. If tracking says delivered while the physical delivery is being handled by Australia Post, contact the local depot or arrange redelivery through the official tracking page.

Apartment living adds another layer. In Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and other dense cities, a driver may leave a parcel with a concierge, building manager, downstairs neighbour or resident in the lift lobby. Check communal mailrooms, parcel lockers, reception shelves and any internal collection instructions. Speak with building management and nearby residents rather than searching their private areas without permission.

Household storage is another possibility, particularly in shared homes. Check under beds, behind doors, inside wardrobes and in vacant rooms. If a search takes you into a bedroom, move stored items carefully; baking soda mattress cleaning can help deal with dust or marks if a box has been stored against the fabric.

Contact Amazon and the courier

Contact Amazon first because it can see the order, delivery instructions and communication sent to the courier. Provide the order number, tracking number, delivery address and the exact location of the “delivered” scan. Ask for a case reference and a written summary, especially if the order is valuable or you have already spent money on another replacement.

Amazon may contact the courier to verify what happened, reopen the delivery scan or arrange another attempt. Ask what solution is available under the order’s circumstances: replacement, refund, credit or further investigation. Keep records of all calls and messages because the time and content of your report can matter if the parcel is later found or the dispute continues.

The courier can also confirm whether the parcel is still on the vehicle, was left at a depot or was handed to another person. If it was sent through Australia Post, use the tracking reference to arrange redelivery or depot collection. For imported orders, remember that GST, customs clearance and the Australian seller or marketplace importer can affect the route and handoff; a genuine support request should not send you to an unrelated customs-payment site.

If the parcel was paid for by credit card or an instalment plan, work out what you can set aside while the claim proceeds. The budgeting method used when calculating monthly mortgage payments can be adapted: compare expected income with rent, mortgage repayments, card instalments and the likely cost of replacing the missing item.

Avoid scams during the dispute

A genuine Amazon investigation should occur inside your account or through contact details you have independently verified. Be cautious with delivery messages that create urgency, mention a failed delivery fee or demand immediate payment. Check the sender, hover over links where safe and compare the destination with Amazon’s official domain before entering personal or financial information.

An unrelated webpage inside a supposed delivery notification is a warning sign. Even a polished article about natural remedies that work has no logical place in an Amazon tracking message. Close the message, report it as phishing and continue through the official app rather than following the link you received.

Never pay a fee, buy a gift card or transfer money to a caller claiming to investigate the parcel. Amazon’s normal process does not require remote access to your device or payment in gift cards. If a caller uses pressure tactics, end the call and contact the company independently. The ACCC and Scamwatch provide Australian guidance on impersonation scams, parcel-delivery lures and fraudulent payment requests.

Photograph the entrance, safe place and any relevant notice, and retain your own doorbell or security-camera footage where applicable. Record only activity connected with the delivery and avoid posting identifiable footage of neighbours publicly. A clear timeline showing when the parcel was due, when it was scanned and when you began searching supports both a carrier query and a payment dispute.

Prevent the next missing delivery

Review the delivery notes before the next order and use the specific options available in the Australian app. Some items can be redirected to a collection point, while others may be held for pickup. Choosing a staffed location or locker reduces the chance that a parcel will be left in an exposed area, although availability varies between sellers and Australian cities.

For apartment residents, add simple instructions such as “leave with concierge” or “use the building’s parcel room” after checking the property’s rules. Avoid instructions that send a driver into a locked wing, obscure parking area or unsafe part of the site. Households using a PO Box should check with the seller and carrier first, since many products are too large for standard post boxes and some marketplace sellers do not deliver to commercial addresses.

Allow realistic time for the tracking record to update, but do not let a stale status replace action. If the scan says delivered and the item is still missing after checking the obvious locations, report it the same day. Follow the courier investigation, keep the case reference and document any replacement charge. For a purchase made through an independent Australian seller, Amazon may still facilitate the resolution under its marketplace policies, while Australian Consumer Law may provide additional rights depending on the circumstances.

A structured response keeps the parcel issue manageable: verify the scan, search the delivery locations, open a documented case and handle suspicious communications cautiously. That sequence protects your money, supports the courier investigation and creates a clear record if a refund, replacement or account adjustment is required.
